A Word About Us

We are a Pentecostal church with a contemporary style of worship. We have been congregating as a body of believers in this building for 30 years now. It was previously a grocery store for the community, but once we outgrew the living room of our house the Lord opened doors for us here. In 1987, following the call of God, we planted a church right here in West Hamlin, WV. We intended to carry on the work that was previously done in this building, and that was to feed the community. We had, and yet still have, a desire to feed our community spiritually. Matthew 5:6 says blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

On June 19, 1988, we officially organized leaving the status of mission work and becoming a recognized body in the Church of God. When we organized we had 10 charter members: Esta Adkins, Glyde Chandler, Alice Roy, Roger and Kim Dial, Ray and Vina Ellis, Cleve Curry, and Lonnie and Dreama Wilson. We now have over 100 members, and have had many go on to their eternal reward. Come be a part of our church you are welcome here. We have just recently completed some expansion work and are excited for the days ahead. It’s a new look, new sanctuary, and a new season for us here at LCOG City On A Hill.

There are 3 passages in the book of Matthew where we draw influence for the vision of our church. Most importantly we want to be viewed in this community as a City On A Hill. We want our church to be: a beacon of light; a place where wanderers can know they have a home; a place where they will be loved and cared for. We want to be the Matthew 25 church: to give food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, an open door to the stranger, and clothes to the naked. Everyone matters to God…therefore everyone matters to us! Matthew 22 Jesus gives us the two greatest commandments and that is what we do here...we LOVE God, and we LOVE people. Finally, the last passage comes from Matthew 28 and it is known as "The Great Commission." This verse is why we exist, to reach the lost! We want this to happen through our outreach/involvement in the community, through the different ministries offered at the church, and through our dynamic worship services designed to reach all walks of life.
